Bikram Yoga (yoga in a hot room) is my new passion and love. Unlike running, this exercise is low impact yet provides high-intensity cardio and strength building at the same time.
I’ve gone to about 8 or 9 classes now, since November, at the bikram yoga studio in Rockville, MD. My favorite instructor there is Louie; he’s descriptive, helpful, and most importantly, he has a great sense of humor! It is so easy to lose sight of your purpose or intention while holding a difficult pose in a hot room and trying to breathe at the same time. I actually get pretty emotional in a couple of the poses but just as I do, Louie announces that it’s OKAY to feel this way and to just accept the thoughts, and let them pass. And keeping a smile on your face tricks you into thinking you’re having fun (which, by the way, you should be doing anyway!).
I was telling my mom all about the benefits of bikram: increased flexibility, increased circulation, detoxification, and better overall mood. She became interested in it and I think I’ll take her to an upcoming weekend class. She may not be in my kind of physical shape, but I ensured her that bikram welcomes all ages and sizes. That’s not to say it won’t be a struggle her first class (mine certainly was!).
On another note… I’ve been focusing a lot of my attention on this particular form of exercise in the last couple weeks, but I anticipate getting back into running so I can be ready for the Cherry Blossom race in April. I also have a goal to lose 10 pounds by March 15 (already 4 pounds down since the new year!).. so I think I’m well on my way 🙂
